MVP Walters leads 11 Leafs on all-league team
|Geneseo’s Andrew Walters has been voted the first Offensive MVP of the new Northern Illinois Big 12 West by the high school conference’s football coaches.
The senior running back led the Leafs in scoring (14 TDs for 84 points), rushing (692 yards for an 8 yards-per-carry average) and total offense (893 yards) this season.
Walters also was among 11 players selected from conference tri-champ Geneseo to the all-league team.
Quarterback Tyler Fisher and linemen Tom Reese and Anthony Roome join Walters on the offensive side of the ball. All are seniors.
Geneseo’s all-league defenders included linemen Alex Anderson and Mark Cothron; defensive backs Blake Croegaert and Billy Hamer; and linebackers West Cathcart, Mark Snodgrass and Landon Hoon. Except for Hoon, a junior, the rest are seniors.
Only tri-champ Sterling — which beat Geneseo 14-7 — had more all-conference selections with 12. Ottawa, which forced the three-way title share by knocking off Sterling, matched Geneseo’s 11 honorees. All three schools finished 4-1 in league play.
In all, 42 players were recognized from the six conference teams — 20 defensive, 18 offensive and four on special teams — with all earning first-team recognition. There was no honorable mention list.
All state honors will be introduce a half hour before the state championship game in Champaign this friday night
